
The England national football team is the oldest in the world. England played their first international match on 30 November. In 1966 England experienced its greatest ever success, by winning the 1966 World Cup Final against West Germany. The English team of the 1990s and 2000s has been consistently in football's top twenty countries, but hasn't progressed beyond the quarter finals of any international tournament. England met Estonia in the Euro 2008 qualifiers on June 6, in Tallinn, Lillekyla Stadium. England brought it’s superstars headed by David Beckham, Michael Owen and Frank Lampard. Estonia lost, the goal scorers were Joe Cole, Peter Crouch and Michael Owen, the latter two was assisted by the famous David Beckham, who led his team to a 3–0 victory. The rematch took place on July 6, in Wembley stadium, England. England won again by three goal margin.
The other relations Estonia has had with English football is through Mart Poom, who has played in English clubs for years, in Watford, Arsenal, Sunderland and Derby County. No other Estonians has ever played in the English Priemere League or any English footballer has played in the Estonian League.
Mart Poom was born in 1972 in Tallinn, Estonia. His footballer career kicked up when he was in the Tallinna’s Lõvid. In 1994 he transferred from FC Wil in Switcherland to Portsmouth in England. After that he has played in many English top clubs including Derby County, Sunderland and the famous London club – Arsenal. Currently he is playing in Watford witch in playing in the British I division and they are currently holding the first position.
